MEDLOG

Built for Extreme Cold. Engineered for Total Protection.
Delivering mission-critical fire protection for Medlog’s 291,000-SF flagship cold storage and blast freezing facility near the Port of Savannah

Medlog set out to create a next-generation cold chain logistics hub strategically positioned near the Port of Savannah to dramatically expand U.S. export capacity for meat and other perishable goods. The 291,000-square-foot facility required a fire protection system capable of supporting extreme cold environments, ultra-high storage heights, blast freezing operations and mission-critical supply chain reliability, all while meeting the most stringent life safety and code requirements.

The goal: a world-class cold storage facility built for scale, speed and long-term operational resilience.

Value Delivered
North American Fire Protection delivered a highly engineered fire protection solution designed specifically for one of the most advanced port-adjacent cold storage facilities in the country.

Project Rocket featured a massive, multi-system sprinkler infrastructure protecting towering freezer storage zones, refrigerated docks, office areas and specialized blast freeze operations. The system was engineered to perform reliably in sub-zero temperatures while providing rapid response protection for high-pile storage environments.

Highlights of impact included:

  • Protection for ultra-high cold storage up to 55 feet clear height
  • Advanced preaction and dry pipe systems designed for freezing environments
  • High-capacity water delivery supporting extreme hazard demands
  • Redundancy and reliability built into critical fire protection infrastructure
  • Seamless coordination with developer and GC to meet aggressive timelines

Most importantly, when a real fire event occurred in the facility, the sprinkler system performed exactly as designed; activating, controlling and containing the fire in accordance with NFPA 13 standards, protecting both life safety and millions of dollars in infrastructure and inventory.

This project stands as a real-world demonstration that properly engineered fire protection doesn’t just meet code, it saves facilities.

Scope of Services
North American Fire Protection provided a complete turnkey fire protection solution, including:

  • Full fire sprinkler system design and engineering
  • Tyco cold storage-specific system strategy and code analysis
  • Clean agent system for server room
  • Multiple dry pipe and double interlock preaction systems for freezer environments
  • Two 2,500 gpm diesel fire pumps
  • Riser room layouts and system integration across the facility
  • Installation, testing, commissioning and final inspections

The project protected the entire 291,000+ square-foot facility using a highly coordinated multi-system approach supported by large-scale fire water supply infrastructure, including dual diesel fire pumps and a dedicated on-site water storage solution.

In total, the facility incorporated nearly 2,600 sprinklers, including over 1,800 high-performance K-34 Quell Upright Sprinklers across 16 separate sprinkler systems, showcasing NAFPCO’s ability to execute complex, high-volume industrial projects at scale.

Background on Building Owner
Medlog is the global logistics arm of MSC, Mediterranean Shipping Company, one of the world’s largest container shipping organizations. Medlog specializes in end-to-end supply chain solutions including port services, intermodal transport, warehousing and temperature-controlled logistics.

Project Rocket represents Medlog’s flagship investment in U.S. cold chain infrastructure, forming a critical link between American producers and international markets. Strategically located near Georgia’s port network, the facility significantly strengthens cold storage capacity supporting meat exports and perishable goods distribution across global supply chains.

Developed by Cold Summit, the first pure-play cold storage developer in the industry, the project embodies a new generation of highly efficient, scalable and technologically advanced refrigerated logistics facilities built to reshape the global cold chain.

Why This Project Matters
Project Rocket isn’t just a building, it’s a statement of what modern cold storage infrastructure requires:

✔ Massive scale
✔ Precision engineering
✔ Specialized fire protection expertise
✔ Proven real-world performance

For North American Fire Protection, it demonstrates our ability to design and deliver complex, mission-critical fire protection systems for the most demanding industrial environments in the country.
